Diet and Exercise Tips for Gestational Diabetic

    • Eat 3 small meals and 3 snacks every day.

    • Follow the food plan that was reviewed with you by your Doctor or through the Diabetes Class.

    • Limit the carbohydrates (pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, fruit and milk).

    • Low in fat (less than or equal to 3 grams per serving)

    • High in fiber (dietary fiber greater than or equal to 3 grams per serving)

    • Lower in salt (less than or equal to 200mg per serving)

    • Wait at least 2 to 3 hours between all meals and snacks

    • DO NOT SKIP SNACKS, these are a very important part of your diet plan and will help you keep your blood sugars at a normal range. Skipping snacks can actually lead to high blood sugars.

    • Remember to record your fasting blood sugars and 1 hour after each meal and bring to your appointments for reviewing.

    Exercise Recommendations:

    • Exercising regularly can help keep your blood sugars normal and may decrease your need for insulin or medications.

    • Always exercise after you have had a meal/snack. If you have a choice, morning after breakfast is best. If you take insulin, always check your blood sugar before exercising

    • A little exercise (1/2 hour walk) each day is better than occasional exercise (once a week).

    • Avoid strenuous exercise and excessive heat.

    • Do not perform any exercise while flat on your back after the fourth month of pregnancy.

    • Take frequent breaks and drink plenty of fluids.
